David Thorpe

With sadness we share the news of David Thorpe’s passing. David was a writer, environmentalist and member of Disability Arts Cymru.

He contributed significantly to popular culture, including the creation of ‘Earth 616’ - the fictional world where Marvel movies take place - and the reinvention of Captain Britain in Marvel Comics. His love for nature transferred to the comic pages with the depiction of renewable energy and the effects of climate change.

Some more examples of David’s far-reaching work include contributions to the ‘Earthscan Expert Series’, a renowned collection of books on low-carbon technologies, and he was the news editor of ‘Energy and Environmental Management’ magazine, for the UK Department for Environment, Food & Rural Affairs.

He has had nothing short of a significant impact in raising the profile of cultural and academic environmentalism.

David was one of the writers on the 2023 cohort of Reinventing the Protagonist writing course, a joint venture between Literature Wales, Katie O’Reilly, and Disability Arts Cymru.

He died peacefully on the 25th April in Barcelona, at the age of 69.
